Abuse? :: essays research papers
Abuse à à à à à According to a May 2001 article in Parents magazine 67% of the American population condones spanking as a regular form of discipline. Also, 67% say they would oppose a law prohibiting spanking at home and says that only 17% would support it. According to advice columnist and family psychologist John Rosemond, ââ¬Å"Many parents are becoming frustrated with the very weak forms of discipline du jour advocated by ââ¬Ëpsychologically correctââ¬â¢ experts. He also says ââ¬Å"More than 90% of children raised in the 1950ââ¬â¢s and early ââ¬â¢60s were spanked and we donââ¬â¢t go around hitting people when we donââ¬â¢t get our way.â⬠à à à à à à à à à à While I was visiting a friend recently, she told me about her most recent visit to the doctor with her two-year-old daughter. She told me that she was trying to get her daughter ready to leave after the appointment was over and her daughter would not quit playing with the toys which were in the doctorââ¬â¢s office. After several minutes of struggling with her daughter to get her coat on, her daughter turned to her, said ââ¬Å"no, momâ⬠and then her daughter proceeded to slap her across the face. My friend put her daughter over her knee and gave her a quick swat and told her that she was not to treat her mother like that. After seeing this, a nurse came over to my friend and told her that if they ever see her hit her daughter again they would call the Department of Children and Family Services. à à à à à à à à à à This situation is not all that unfamiliar to me these days. I hear of parents in similar situations almost every day and sometimes I actually see it with my own eyes. For instance, I was in Wal-Mart a few weeks ago and witnessed a woman tell a father that she was going to report him for child abuse because he grabbed his sonââ¬â¢s arm and yelled at him for taking off and running through the store. Apparently the father had turned to look at something on the shelf and when he turned back around his son was gone and the father was paged over the store intercom to come and retrieve his son from across the store. In my opinion, that child was lucky that his father hadnââ¬â¢t given him a spanking right in the middle of the store. When I was a child my father would have given me a real whopper of a spanking for pulling a stunt like that in a store.

Love is stronger than hate Essay
Nobody who has either heard or seen the tale of ââ¬Å"Romeo and Julietâ⬠can deny that two of the strongest themes found within it are love and hate ââ¬â in many different forms. Even in the beginning of the play, this is made known to the audience, primarily by the lines, ââ¬Å"From forth the fated loins of these two foes, A pair of star-crossed lovers take their lifeâ⬠(Prologue). This clearly shows both the hatred and love which can be found, but is not the only example. ââ¬Å"Romeo and Julietâ⬠not only has the love between the two main characters, but the brotherly love and sinister hatred between many others. It is harder to say whether love or hate is more prominent in ââ¬Å"Romeo and Julietâ⬠, but love plays an extremely important role ââ¬â especially when the two lovers meet for the first time. Right away, Romeo is awestruck at Julietââ¬â¢s beauty, proclaiming, ââ¬Å"Did my heart love til now? Forswear it, sight! For I neââ¬â¢er saw true beauty till this night!â⬠(I.v). Although he claims to be ââ¬Ëin loveââ¬â¢ with Rosaline, he becomes a victim of falling ââ¬Ëin love at first sightââ¬â¢. This love is certainly not unrequited love though ââ¬â although Juliet did not even know his name, she still asks, ââ¬Å"Go ask his name. If he be married, my grave is to be like my wedding bedâ⬠(I.v). Clearly, she is already so much in love that she shall ââ¬Ëdie from griefââ¬â¢ if she finds out Romeo is already married. Although Romeo is in love with Juliet so much that he refuses to fight his one-time enemy, the murder of a close friend (whether accidental or not) forces a violent reaction out of him. When originally ââ¬Ëtauntedââ¬â¢ by Tybalt, he refuses to fight, saying, ââ¬Å"I do protest I have never injured thee, but love thee better than thou canst deviseâ⬠¦And so, good Capuletâ⬠¦be satisfiedâ⬠(III.i). He further continues in this way, by saying, ââ¬Å"Gentle Mercutio, put thy rapier upâ⬠(III.i). However, Tybalt does not listen to reason, as was proven earlier on by his stating, ââ¬Å"Peace? I hate the word as I hate hell, all Montagues, and theeâ⬠(I.i). Onlookers to the fight cannot deny, although Romeo starts off with no intention to fight, he turns violent at the slaying of Mercutio. Challenging Tybalt, he shouts, ââ¬Å"Either thou, or I, or both, must go with himâ⬠(III.i). It is at this point that both the hatred for Tybalt, and his love for Mercutio, overpower him, resulting in the murder of Tybalt. The constant feuding the Montagues and the Capulets is well known to the citizens of Verona ââ¬â it is a common practice. In street fights, even the heads of the houses cannot stay out of it, with Capulet demanding, ââ¬Å"My sword, I say! Old Montague is comeâ⬠(I.i). These fights force the Prince to step in, telling them it has to stop and stating, ââ¬Å"Three civil brawls, bred of an airy word by thee, Old Capulet and Montagueâ⬠(I.i). Even the citizens of Verona are aware of the fact that the feuding is on-going. This is one of the major examples of the hatred that is present throughout the play. It is a wonder that Romeo and Juliet were able to overcome this hate, but both were able to accomplish it. Juliet, in one of the most famous scenes from the play, says, ââ¬Å"Deny thy father and refuse thy name. Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and Iââ¬â¢ll no longer be a Capuletâ⬠(II.ii). She then goes on to say, ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËTis but thy name which is my enemyâ⬠¦Whatââ¬â¢s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet. So Romeo would, were he not Romeo calledâ⬠(II.ii). Juliet is asking herself about the differences between the Capulets and the Montagues, and saying that it does not matter about their backgrounds. All that matters is their love for each other. It is their love for each other, certainly, which makes the two lovers kill themselves. It is a much harder thing to kill yourself than to kill others ââ¬â killing yourself make sit final, whereas killing others, while still hard, is slightly easier, as they have motivations, and sometimes also hatred for the person. The death of Mercutio, and in turn the death of Tybalt is an example of that, where Romeo states in anger, ââ¬Å"Alive and triumph, and Mercutio slain! Away to heaven respective lenity, And fire-eyed fury be my conduct nowâ⬠(III.i). However, both Romeo and Juliet killed themselves due to the strong love they both felt for each other. Overall, it is hard to say which is the stronger emotion ââ¬â love or hate. Personally, I believe that love is stronger than hate, but it is really a matter of opinion ââ¬â there is evidence to support both sides all throughout the play. One of the main things supporting that love is stronger than hateà is Julietââ¬â¢s reaction at finding out who Romeo is. She says to herself, ââ¬Å"My only love, sprung from my only hate! To early seen unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me, that I must love a loathed enemyâ⬠(I.v).

Our writers will create an original "A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley" essay for you Create order Some similarities and differences between A Christmas Carol are characters, setting, and strengths and limitations. One similarity and difference between the film and the play of A Christmas Carol is the characters. Another similarity and difference of the film and play of A Christmas Carol is the setting. The strengths and Limitations of the film and play of A Christmas Carol had many pros and cons. One reason that the play and the film of A Christmas Carol had similarities and differences is the characters. One similarity that the film and the play had was the attitude of Ebenezer Scrooge. The played told us Ebenezer Scrooge character traits as gloomy, miser, grumpy, etc. The film and the play showed that Scrooge was a miser and grumpy. This had an impact on the reader/listener because this shows that Scrooge wasnt the nicest person to talk to or the person you would hang out with. In both the film and the play Scrooge said things that made him a miser, grumpy, etc. For example, wh en the nephew invited Scrooge over for dinner, Scrooge replied, Id rather see myself dead than see myself with you family! However, in the play it identified Scrooge as these things through Jacob Marley. In beginning of they play it started with a monologue with Jacob Marley defining Scrooges character traits. One difference is in the film it does not start like that. You had to identify Scrooge attitude/character traits by watching the film. One way to identify Scrooges character traits is that he didnt talk as much, he wore all black, etc. Another example, is how the play and the film described Jacob Marley. One similarity is that both, the film and the play, had Marley, a ghost, who had to wear a long chain because of his past life with Ebenezer. One differences was that in the play it described Marley as Scrooges partner that acted the same way as young Scrooge. It also described Marley as obsess with Scrooge. It shows this in scene 1 Marley said, Scrooge was my sole executor, my sole administrator, my sole assign In the film, Jacob acted like he was innocent and Scrooge made him the way he was. This proves that the character development is different in the play than in the film of the movie A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley Act 1. These similarities and differences described the main characters in the play and the film of A Christmas Carol. Another analogy and opposition between the play and the film of A Christmas Carol is the setting. In both the play and the film it started with a sadder feel. They both gives reasons that Scrooge is living a miserable life. In the play, it started at Scrooges shop called Scrooge and Marleys. Inside the shop its Scrooge and his clerk Cratchit. The shop is cold because its the winter a nd Scrooge doesnt turn on the heat. When Cratchit tried to heat himself up, Scrooge told him this. What are you doing Cratchit? Acting cold, are you? and Scrooge continued with Well, save your breath, Cratchit! Unless youre prepared yourself to find employ elsewhere! This gives the reader an idea about Scrooges attitude. For example, it can give the reader an idea that since the environment Scrooge be in, it can translate to his attitude. In the film, the setting started at Marleys funeral. This gives the reader/listener a feel and environment of the movie. Scrooge really didnt say much at the funeral. He wore all black, and he creeped people out because he didnt say anything. This shows that the setting is developed different in the play of the movie than in the film version of it. He developed different settings, but still gave off the same feel and mood of the story. The strengths and Limitations of the play and film of A Christmas Carol is the pros and cons. The pros on the play was the stage directions, the monolo gue Jacob Marley gave about Scrooge, and dialogue. The stage directions helped the readers know what was going on in the play, was the characters did, etc. They helped on what the was going on in the play because they gave us details on the play. For example, ghostly music in auditorium. A single spotlight on Jacob Marley This gives virtualization of the scene. The monologue really helped the scene too. It gave character traits and expectation of Scrooge. The cons of the play was that it really couldnt understand some characters. For example, it really didnt describe Jacob Marley. They never gave us details on him. Some details it couldve gave us was how did he die, what kind of an impact did he have on Scrooge, etc. The pros of the film was that it virtualize Scrooges mood, it had a great setting, etc. It virtualize Scrooges mood by what he was saying and what he was doing to his face. Scrooge wasnt talking much. He only would talk if someone talked to him. He wore all black to the funeral that kinda creeped people out. He always frowned up his face that made him look mad all the time. It had a great setting because it started at the funeral. This gave questions like what happened at Marleys funeral? This setting really impact the mood of Scrooge. The cons of the film was that it didnt include the relationship of Scrooge and Marley. This couldve gave the watchers an idea of how close Scrooge and Marley was and what kind of an impact Marleys death had on Scrooge. In conclusion, even through the play and the film of A Christmas Carol had many similarities and differences, they both was a from of entertainment. More people should check the book and the film version of A Christmas Carol out because it is very entertaining to read/watch. One correlation and unlikeness was the characters. Another analogy and opposition was the setting. Some strengths and limitations of A Christmas Carol was the pros and cons. More people should check the play and the film versions of it out because its interesting to read/watch.
